Janna Jordan
Lead Guitars/Vocals
Picking up the guitar at the age of 12, Janna Jordan immediately became obsessed
with the instrument. A self-taught guitarist who plays by ear, Jordan would pick
apart songs of her favorite bands, not satisfied until she had learned those
songs note for note.
"I remember spending hours a day in my bedroom, rewinding tapes of my
favorite bands over and over again, making sure I had the solos down note for
note. If it wasn't perfect, I wasn't satisfied. My teenage years were primarily
spent behind the guitar."
Jordan's drive to become skilled at her instrument only increased throughout her
youth. She entered Tulsa's "Best Rock Guitarist" contest at the age of
16 and tied for third place that year. The following year, she won the contest
as the only female in a field of over 20 competitors.
Entering her 20s, she began playing in bands and touring. But only now does she
feel she is beginning to reach goals she set for herself when she first started
playing. "Syke and I have played together in bands for many, many years.
But there's no doubt in my mind that the best project we've ever done is Down
For Five. We have one of the best rhythm sections around, one of the best lead
vocalists, and the showmanship is through the roof. I'm proud to be a member of
this band. All my hard work, individually, is starting to pay off and I credit
Syke, Scott, and Jester and what the four of us create and accomplish together
as big reasons for that payoff."
Jordan's influences range from heavy metal acts of the mid to late 80s to
present day, but she credits former Dokken guitarist George Lynch as her main
influence.
"There was always something about George's playing. He knew exactly what to
play and when to play it, whether it was something somewhat simplistic or
complete shredding. He knew how to make you feel every note he played. I believe
he's one of the best lead guitarists out there."
In addition to Lynch, another main influence for Jordan is the highly-revered
and deeply missed Dimebag Darrell Abbott.
"If it wasnt' for Dimebag, I think heavy metal leads would have died in the
90s. He kept it alive and revolutionized it. I definitely incorporate some of
his tricks and flavor into my playing. Hopefully I can help carry on the torch
he so masterfully kept lit for heavy metal guitarists during the grunge era.
That torch must be carried on and one of my goals as a lead guitarist is to do
that and do it well."
